Touching the Light
“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure”
– Christopher McCandless
There come times when something feels right. A retrospective. A look back …
I’m thrilled to announce a new presentation for this coming talks season, called “Summits and Secrets”, unashamedly inspired by the book of the same name “Gipfel und Geheimnisse” by the great mountaineer Kurt Diemberger (whose stature in the world of adventure towers massively above my own, like Everest over Truleigh Hill).
The presentation is a celebration of my experiences with a camera over a lifetime, with a few of the people most special to me, using photography to paint an authentic picture of who we are and to tell the stories of Summits and Secrets.”
It reveals the places, the people, the challenges, the hardships. The moments of magic provided by nature and the privilege to be there to experience them. Stories revealed through a responsive approach to photography; in the moment and personal.
A look back … does that mean the end of something? In my case definitely not. I intend to continue adventure so long as I can walk. But I feel the need right now to tell the stories.
In another context I wrote recently that I often wonder, in this social media age, whether the camera is becoming a substitute for experience.
My whole photographic career has been motivated by experience, not the seeking of single images. Images come and images go. Often they come naturally when I am fully tuned in to the present moment of experience. But if they do not come, my experience is undiminished, not dependent upon whether or not I ‘capture’ the moment or whether my image is ‘faved’ or ‘Explored’ on Flickr.
This responsive approach continues to reaffirm my conviction that photography – especially in an authentic body of work – is a powerful medium that can reveal much of who we are.
